The Republic of Ecuador (literal translation is the Republic of the Equator!) is a country of about 16 million people in the north-west of South America. Ecuador is bordered by Peru to the east and south, the Pacific Ocean to the west and Colombia to the north. Ecuador also includes the famous Galápagos Islands which lie in the Pacific Ocean, about 1,000 kilometres west of the mainland.

The capital city Quito is the second largest city in population (2.3M). The largest city is Guayaquil on the coast (2.7M).

Most Ecuadorians speak Spanish, although many also speak a second language – usually an Amerindian one such as Kichwa. Around 2.5 million people speak Kichwa across Ecuador, Bolivia, Peru, and Colombia.
